ASIP – Before & After (Das Kraftfuttermischwerk Adventskalender)

I’ve put together this very special ambient/dub-techno mix for the brilliant Das Kraftfuttermischwerk as part of their Advent Calendar series. So far, the series has featured some superb mixes by some of the site’s musical inspirations, so i’m honoured to take part and contribute.

This is an extra special moment for ASIP too, as the hard work going on behind the scenes is starting to come to light. I’ve featured two previously unheard tracks in this mix which are lined up to be a part of the upcoming ASIP release series. The first one, by Kit Fegradoe, set’s the idealic scene ‘In Nam’ and the second, a whirring jungle-sampled stormer from Robert Heel. More info on both of these in due course, but for now grab yourself a sneak preview of what’s to come!

These tracks sit alongside some other greats which go someway to summarising what I have been listening to for most of this year. The treasured finds of Parks and LJ Kruzer, another superb release from Energostatic, a great year for Specta Ciera and the twinkling classic of Warp’s Brothomstates help portray my idea of the calm before, the madness during and the beauty after a storm.

If you’d like to find out a bit more information about the planned ASIP release series, see here. But stay tuned to ASIP in the next few months as we’ve got some amazing artists lined up already.

Thanks to Ronny at Das Kraftfuttermischwerk for the invite and the continued support. And thanks to you guys for tuning in. Exciting 2012 ahead!

ASIP - The isolated 2000

Just under three months after asking everyone on the ASIP Facebook page for their tracks of choice, The isolated 2000 is finally here. Yes, it took a while, but you know the saying…

For those that are new to this mix theme (and for those who missed the first one – The isolated 1000), this is a selection of tracks chosen by members of the ASIP Facebook page (the first 2000 to be exact). The ask was easy – choose a track which you have discovered or come to love because of an artist or mix featured on ASIP.

The result… a track list featuring some of the best music of recent times and dare I say it, all time. Music ranged from horizontal ambient, to classic techno and most of my favourite artists were thrown into consideration, along with more recent artists which are undoubtedly flying the future classic flag.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get every track submitted into the mix (18 out of 28 isn’t bad right?!) and this was the very reason for the mix taking so long – I’ve been doing my best to make them all work together and get everyone’s selections in. But, I had to keep some kind of structure and I hope you all enjoy where I ended up. After all, it would’ve been over two hours long if I got them all in there!

Additional to deciding the track list, I also asked for contributions for the artwork. Needless to say, the response was amazing and the images were just as epic. You all had your say on the Facebook page, by ‘liking’ your favourite, but one had to be chosen as the lead image, and George Potter gets the crowning glory for his simple yet blissful image of Lake Michigan – no doubt a contender for his very own strangely isolated place. Not only did George’s image get a bunch of ‘Likes’ on the Facebook page, but George is without fail one of the most active contributors on the page – a worthy winner in my books.  All of the submissions are available to view below (and embedded within the track ID3 tags), so a big thank you to everyone who submitted both artwork and track suggestions – I just wish there was a way to use them all.

ASIP – Traumbient #2

After the first ‘Traumbient‘ mix in November last year, I was of course left with a bunch of tracks that didn’t make the final cut. I knew back then that this wasn’t going to be the end of my ‘Traum Schallplatten‘ mix adventures – there’s simply too much good music lurking in the Traum treasure chest.

For the second ‘Traumbient’ mix, i’ve picked out a few ambient stunners to begin proceedings, but ended up taking the mix to the far-end of the Traum techno spectrum. It’s titled Traumbient #2 because it’s the second mix, but it’s also Traumbient #2 because it represents Traum’s second gear; the driving, melodic and interestingly unique style of techno that has produced some of todays most talented artists and inspired me ten-times over.

In true retrospective style, the mix spans tracks from the labels eleven year existence. From Traum’s very first artist release in 2000, Gustavo Lamas, to one of the biggest albums of 2011 – Dominik Eulberg’s Diorama and the star track ‘Der Tanz der Gluehwuermchen’, if you weren’t familiar with Cologne’s finest export, then hopefully this mix will give you a taste of what you’ve been missing.

If you haven’t heard the very first ‘Traumbient’ mix you can check it out here.

ASIP – Glacially Patterned Oases (Mix for RTFKT)

I’m honoured to be able to contribute to the RTFKT Mutecast series with a special mix I spent the best part of two months deliberating, experimenting, swapping around and finally putting together. I’ve ended up with an electronic mix which is very much in the vain of the kind of music the guys over at RTFKT are regularly posting about, featuring some pretty recent stuff including Jesse Somfay’s release onZaubernuss as Flourish, one of the best tracks from aboutface’s EP and Jon Hopkins’ absolutely cataclysmic remix of Agoria’s Panta Rei.

I’ve also included a few artists I hope to give a bit more exposure to including; Technicolour and 110ML, who both boast brilliant releases on the recently launched net label Energostatic; a much loved ASIP favourite in the form of 36 – who deserves all the attention he can get and the Bluetech and Kilowatt collaboration as Invisible Allies to help spice things up a bit.

If you haven’t experienced any of RTFKT’s Mutecasts so far, check them out here with some great mixes from our man Mig Dfoe, Applescal, and the previously featured Feffeffef. (You might also notice some nifty looking artwork in one of the mixes!)

You can read the original post on RTFKT here with a few humbling words about the site. Thanks guys!

ASIP - Modyfier: Process Part 262

Number 200 saw a live set from Irisarri and The Sight Below, 217 and Canadian maestro Jesse Somfay jumped on board. February 2010 and ASIP posted Tom McCarthy’s inspiring mix and a year later, another beauty arose in the form of Franklin Da Costa’s Process part 250.

Modyfier’s Process series is one of my favourite mix series I’ve been lucky enough to stumble upon in recent years, and inspiration from the artists and productions included has been non-stop. From the stunning sets mentioned above, to three-minute miniatures and one track made from 15 others, Modyfier aims to bring out a very specific principal from its contributors; why things are made, not how.

I’m extremely honoured to participate in this series and I hope I’ve done it justice, by focusing on tracks which I believe have been made with something in mind – an inspiration of sorts, with a specific reflection or moment in time conjured by the artist.

I didn’t expect this mix to hit at the same time as the Origami Sound guest mix – weirdly enough these were both put together a few months back, so it’s great to finally let them loose. They’re very different approaches, and the ambient enthusiast among us may well appreciate this mix a bit more.

Many of of you already follow Modyfier religiously, but for those who don’t, make an essential stop and trawl through the other 261 mixes on offer. Hopefully mine is up to scratch and you enjoy it just as much as I did putting it together.

Here’s my Intro text for the mix over on Modyfier:
This is some of the most simple, yet interesting, evocative and at the same time, complex music I have had the pleasure of listening to over the years. When perfected, ambient music can take you where ever you want to go, transport you from madness to bliss. The greatest producers have found influences from experiences and surroundings, then channeled it for us lucky people to reflect upon and experience in our own way.

Most of the artist’s featured are personal favourites who I spend hours and hours listening to, wondering what, where and when helped conjure up such aural bliss. A Mojave desert, a British summer, an airport, a New Zealand fjord or a damp studio in South East London. Whatever fueled this music doesn’t matter, where we escape to when listening is the only importance.

Big thank you to Rayna for giving me the opportunity to put this mix together.
